How do I convert stereo to mono without losing level?

This tool averages the channels rather than adding them, so a correlated mix keeps roughly its level and cannot clip from the sum alone. The reported level change tells you exactly what the fold cost.

Why does part of my mix disappear in mono?

Anything that exists only in the side signal — wide reverb, a phase-inverted double, some stereo wideners — cancels when the channels are summed. The width and correlation readings show how much of the file is at risk before you export.

Does converting mono to stereo make it wider?

No. It writes the same signal into two channels, so the file is stereo but the sound is still mono. Real width needs different content in each channel.

When should I use a mono file?

How this works

A mono fold sums what the two channels have in common and cancels what they do not. The mid signal — the average of left and right — survives; the side signal — half their difference — disappears entirely. That is why a wide, heavily processed mix can lose noticeable body in mono while a close-miked vocal loses nothing at all.

The correlation reading is the fastest way to predict this. Near +1 means the channels agree and the fold is safe. Near 0 means the sides carry real content. Below 0 means parts of the file are actively out of phase and will cancel. Width shows how much of the total energy sits in the sides, and the level figure is the measured change after the fold rather than an estimate.

Going the other way is honest but limited: duplicating a channel produces a stereo file that sounds identical to the mono original. It is useful when a delivery spec demands two channels, not when you want the part to feel bigger.
