How do I transpose a chord sheet?

Paste the chords and set how many semitones to move. Every chord shifts by the same amount, keeping its quality — Am becomes Bm up two semitones, not B major.

Does it keep sevenths, sus and slash chords?

Yes. Qualities such as maj7, m7, sus4, add9 and dim are preserved, and slash bass notes are transposed with the chord. Anything it cannot parse is listed rather than silently changed.

Why does it use flats sometimes?

Because that is the conventional spelling for some keys. Transposing into Eb reads better with Eb, Ab and Bb than with D#, G# and A#. You can force sharps or flats yourself.

How many semitones to change key?

The distance between the two roots. C to D is two semitones up; C to A is three down or nine up. Down is often better for singers when the original is too high.

How this works

Transposition is addition: every root moves by the same number of semitones and the chord quality is untouched. That is why a minor chord stays minor and a maj7 stays a maj7 — only the root and any slash bass note change.

Spelling is the part that needs judgement. The same pitch can be written D# or Eb, and the right choice depends on the destination key. The automatic setting follows the usual convention; override it if your sheet or bandmates expect the other.

Anything the parser does not recognise is listed instead of guessed at. A wrong chord is worse than an obvious gap.
