What Camelot number is A minor?

8A. Its relative major, C major, is 8B — the same number on the other side of the wheel.

What does the letter mean?

A is a minor key, B is a major key. The number is the position on the circle of fifths from 1 to 12.

Is Camelot the same as Open Key notation?

It is the same idea with different labels. Open Key uses m and d suffixes instead of A and B, and the numbers are offset, so 8A in Camelot is 1m in Open Key. Convert rather than assuming the numbers match.

Why does my DJ software show a different key?

Key detection is an estimate, and different software uses different algorithms. Disagreements are most common on tracks with few tonal cues or with an ambiguous third — trust your ears over either reading.

How this works

Camelot notation exists so DJs can compare keys at a glance. The number places the key on the circle of fifths; the letter says whether it is minor (A) or major (B). Codes with the same number are relatives and share all seven notes.

The conversion is exact both ways because it is a fixed mapping, not an estimate. What is an estimate is the key itself when it came from detection software — including ours.
