How this works
Pitch and speed are the same operation until you separate them. Resampling a file by a ratio of 2^(semitones ÷ 12) shifts every frequency in it exactly, and changes the length by the same ratio. To keep the length, that change has to be undone with a time stretch — which is where the artefacts come from, not from the pitch move itself.
In practice: small shifts are transparent, and the further you go the more you hear the stretch. If a sample is a long way from your key, it is often better to shift a smaller amount and change the chord underneath it than to force a six-semitone move.
