Are my files uploaded to join them?

No. Every file is decoded in your browser, joined there, and the result is saved straight to your device. Nothing is uploaded or stored.

How many files can I join at once?

Up to twelve, in whatever order you arrange them. They are held in the tab, so very long files are limited by your device's memory rather than by an upload size.

What if the files have different sample rates or channel counts?

Everything is matched to the first file. A different sample rate is properly resampled so it plays at the right speed and pitch, and a mono file is spread across both channels when any other file is stereo.

Why is there a click between two joined files?

Because both waveforms are away from zero at the join. Add a crossfade of 10–50 ms and it disappears. Longer crossfades blend the material rather than simply hiding the seam.

Does joining re-encode the audio?

Not when you export WAV — the samples are copied, so untouched regions are bit-for-bit identical. MP3 export re-encodes, as any MP3 must.

How this works

Joining is a copy operation: the samples of each file are written end to end into one longer buffer. With no crossfade the result is a butt join, which is exact but only clean when both files sit near zero at the seam. With a crossfade the tail of one file and the head of the next overlap, and the total length shortens by the crossfade at each join.

The crossfade is equal power, following a sine curve, so the level stays steady through the overlap instead of dipping in the middle the way a linear crossfade does on uncorrelated material.

Mismatched files are the usual reason a join sounds wrong elsewhere. Here the first file sets the format: anything at a different sample rate is resampled with interpolation so its pitch and speed are preserved, and channel counts are matched so a mono take does not end up playing out of one side.
