How this works
A fade multiplies each sample by a gain that moves between silence and unity. Nothing is resampled or re-timed, so the file keeps its exact length and every sample outside the fade regions is untouched.
The curve decides how it feels. Equal power follows a quarter sine, which tracks perceived loudness and is the standard choice for music and crossfades. Linear moves evenly in amplitude, which reads as a slightly abrupt finish because hearing is logarithmic. Exponential holds low for longer and then rises, which is useful for risers and long ambient tails.
Two practical uses beyond aesthetics: a 5–20 ms fade in fixes the click that appears when a cut lands mid-waveform, and a fade out of a second or more prevents the abrupt stop that makes an otherwise finished bounce sound unfinished.
