How this works
Conversion is only lossless in one direction. Any decodable file can be written out as WAV with no further loss, but writing MP3 always discards data, and nothing can bring back what a previous lossy encode removed.
So the practical rule is simple: convert to WAV whenever the file has more work ahead of it — editing, mastering, training, archiving — and convert to MP3 only at the point of sending it to someone.
Sample rate is left untouched here on purpose. Resampling is a separate decision with its own quality trade-off, and silently changing it is how converters ruin timing-critical material.
