Is my audio uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is decoded and transformed by your browser, and the spectrum is drawn in the page. Nothing is sent to a server and nothing is stored.

What is the difference between this and a spectrogram?

A spectrogram shows frequency over time. This shows the average spectrum of the whole file in one curve, which is what you want when comparing a mix against a reference or checking overall balance.

Is there a correct spectrum shape?

No. Most full mixes slope downwards from the low end to the top, but the slope depends entirely on genre, arrangement and instrumentation. Compare your own versions and your references rather than chasing a curve.

Why does the top of the spectrum stop before 20 kHz?

Either the sample rate cannot store more, or a lossy encoder removed it. The spectral ceiling figure tells you where the energy actually stops, which is often 15 to 16 kHz for a file that passed through an MP3 at some point.

Which FFT size should I pick?

2048 is a good default. Larger windows resolve low frequencies more precisely, which helps when you are looking at a bass note or a resonance; smaller windows smear pitch but respond faster to transients.

How this works

The audio is cut into overlapping windows, each window is converted from samples into frequency bins with a Fourier transform, and every bin is averaged across the file. What you get is a single curve describing how the energy of the whole piece is distributed — the same measurement a mastering engineer uses to compare a mix against a reference.

The band table sits underneath the curve because a shape is hard to read precisely. Each band shows an average level and a share of the total energy, so you can say something concrete such as “my low end holds 40% of the energy and the reference holds 28%” instead of guessing from a picture.

One thing this tool deliberately does not do is grade your mix. There is no target curve, no score and no recommendation, because a correct spectrum for a sparse folk recording and a correct spectrum for a club master have nothing in common.
