What does the correlation number mean?

+1 means both channels are identical, 0 means they are unrelated, and −1 means one is the exact inverse of the other. Most music sits between +0.3 and +0.9.

Is negative correlation always a problem?

No. Brief negative moments in reverb tails or wide synths are normal. It becomes a problem when low frequencies or the lead elements are out of phase, because those disappear when the mix is folded to mono.

What is the mono fold figure?

The level change when the two channels are summed to mono. Around 0 to −1.5 dB is healthy. Larger losses mean significant material is cancelling.

How do I fix an out-of-phase mix?

Find the offending source: flip polarity on a doubled track, narrow wide stereo effects on bass and kick, and check for a delayed duplicate. Then re-measure and compare the fold figure.

How this works

Correlation compares the left and right channels sample by sample. Identical channels give +1, unrelated channels give 0, and an exact inversion gives −1. Reading it over short windows is more useful than one number for the whole track, because problems tend to live in specific sections.

The mono fold figure turns that into a decision. If summing to mono costs you a fraction of a decibel, nothing important is cancelling. If it costs several decibels, something wide — usually a doubled part, a stereo widener on bass, or a polarity-flipped duplicate — is fighting itself.

Clubs, phones, laptop speakers and many broadcast paths are effectively mono. Checking this before you deliver is cheaper than discovering the hook vanishes on a single speaker.
