What is the difference between crest factor and peak to loudness?

Crest factor is sample peak minus overall RMS — a raw electrical figure. Peak to loudness is true peak minus gated LUFS loudness, so it is weighted for hearing and ignores silence. PLR is the figure to compare between masters.

What dynamic range should a master have?

There is no correct number. Loud modern masters often sit between 6 and 9 dB PLR, mixes that still breathe sit around 10 to 14 dB, and sparse or acoustic material can be far wider. What matters is whether the music survived the process.

What does loudness range (LRA) tell me?

It measures how much the loudness varies between sections, in loudness units. A low LRA means every section plays at the same level; a high LRA means the arrangement has real quiet and loud passages.

Does a low dynamic range mean my mix is damaged?

Not by itself. Heavy limiting can flatten transients and cost detail, but plenty of genres are meant to be dense and constant. Use the figure to compare two versions of your own master, where the difference is meaningful.

How this works

Dynamics come in two forms and this tool measures both. Short-term crest is the distance between the loudest instants and the average level, reported as crest factor and as peak-to-loudness ratio. Long-term movement is the difference between quiet and loud sections of the arrangement, reported as loudness range in loudness units.

The loudness figures follow ITU-R BS.1770-4: K-weighted, gated, and true peak measured with oversampling so inter-sample peaks are included. That means the numbers here line up with the numbers a mastering house or a broadcaster would read from the same file.

The useful workflow is comparison, not scoring. Measure your mix, then measure your master, then measure a reference you admire. The gaps between those three tell you far more than any single figure held against an imaginary standard.
