What counts as clipping here?

Two or more consecutive samples sitting at or above the ceiling you choose. Single samples at full scale are counted separately, because one isolated sample is usually harmless rounding rather than a flat-topped waveform.

My limiter is set to −0.1 dB and the tool still finds runs. Is that bad?

Not necessarily. A limiter holding the ceiling produces long runs at that level by design. The question is whether the shape underneath was squashed: check the longest runs, and listen to those positions.

Why does a file with no clipped samples still distort?

Because clipping can happen before the render — inside a plugin chain, a summing stage or an analogue input — and it can also appear after conversion as inter-sample peaks. Use the LUFS Meter to read true peak for that second case.

How do I fix clipping?

Lower the gain feeding the stage that clipped and render again. Repairing a clipped file only interpolates a guess at the missing waveform, so re-rendering is always better when you still have the session.

How this works

Digital clipping is visible in the data: a run of samples pinned at the maximum value where a curve should have been. That is what this tool counts — consecutive samples at or above your chosen ceiling, grouped into runs, with the longest ones listed by position.

Length matters more than the count. Thousands of two-sample touches on a loud master are usually a limiter doing its job, while a single run lasting tens of milliseconds is a flattened transient you will hear as a crack or a buzz.

One clipped sample is not the same as a clipped record. Use this to locate suspicious moments, then judge them by ear at those timestamps and fix the gain upstream rather than repairing the file.
